Az 1838-as nagy pesti árvíz idején sokan kerestek menedéket az enyhe magaslaton álló kő-tégla templomban. A víz teljesen ellepte a kriptát, még a templomtérbe is betört. Az ár jelentős károkat okozott, ezért az ezt követő években a helyreállítás volt a fő feladat.
Bár már 1831-tól napirenden volt a toronyóra ügye, azt csak 1843-ban készíthette el Szűcs János órásmester. A külső portikusz tervének elkészítésével is Hild Józsefet bízták meg 1847-ben, aki eltérve Hild Vince eredeti hat oszlopos elképzelésétól, egy négy oszlopos, timpanonos bejárati előteret javasolt építeni.
A megnövekedett gyülekezet számára Hild József tervei alapján, gróf Zichy Manó finanszírozásával karzat épült, amivel 980-ra nőtt a férőhelyek száma. A gróf azért tett nagylelkű felajánlást, mert a gyülekezet hozzájárult ahhoz, hogy az 1852-ben a kriptában eltemetett, tragikus körülmények között elhunyt feleségének anglikán szokásnak megfelelően síremléket állíthasson. A Feszl Frigyes által tervezett neogótikus síremlék nem a templom terében, hanem a külső fal kibontásával, a templom mellé épült. A carrarai márvány síremlék Raymond Gayrard párizsi szobrász alkotása.
Az eredetileg fazsindelyes, egyszerű toronysisak helyett a ma is álló réz sisak került, aminek felépítésére Buchold János ácsmester kapott megbízást 1859-ben.
Komolyabb belső felújítás a templomban 1926-ig nem történt. Pogány Móric és Tóry Emil vállalta térítésmentesen a belső restaurálás terveinek elkészítését. Az üvegablakok elkészítésére Róth Miksával kötöttek szerződést. 1945-ben és 1956-ban súlyos károkat szenvedett az épület, de csak helyreállításra, részleges restaurálásra nyílt akkor lehetőség.
Ahogy a templom épülete évszázadok át, úgy a mi életünk is évtizedeken keresztül formálódik, megújul. Isten szavát meghallani, a formálódásra késznek lenni a mi döntésünk. 2. Growth and transformation – the history of our congregation and the church Part 2
During the great flood in Pest in 1838, many people sought refuge in the stone and brick church on a slight elevation. The water completely flooded the crypt, even breaking into the churchyard. The flood caused considerable damage, so in the years that followed, restoration was the main task.
Although the clock tower had been on the agenda since 1831, it was not until 1843 that János Szűcs, the clockmaker, was able to make it. The design of the external portico was also entrusted to József Hild in 1847, who departing from Vince Hild’s original six-column design, proposed a four-column entrance hall with a tympanum.
For the enlarged congregation, a choir loft was built on the basis of József Hild’s plans, financed by Count Manó Zichy, increasing the seating capacity to 980. The count’s generous donation was made because the congregation had contributed to the erection of a tomb in accordance with anglican custom for his wife, who died tragically in the crypt in 1852. The neo-gothic tomb, designed by Frigyes Feszl, was not built in the churchyard, but by demolishing the outer wall, next to the church. The Carrara marble tomb is the work of the parisian sculptor Raymond Gayrard.
The simple tower helmet, originally made of shingles, was replaced by the copper helmet still standing today, commissioned in 1859 by master carpenter János Buchold.
No major interior renovation of the church took place until 1926. Móric Pogány and Emil Tóry undertook to prepare the plans for the interior restoration free of charge. In 1945 and 1956, the building suffered severe damage, but only restoration, partial restoration, was possible at that time.
Just as the church building is shaped and renewed over centuries, so our life is shaped and renewed over decades. To hear God’s word, to be ready to be formed, is our choice. The word of Scripture to you today is this. Hebrews chapter 8.
